Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
