Approximately 35,000 individuals could be affected, alerts the US embassy

A significant security compromise in Somalia's e-visa platform potentially disclosed personal information belonging to many thousands of travelers, including United States passport holders, the US embassy in Mogadishu has warned.

It said obtained trustworthy accounts that "unknown cyber attackers" compromised the Somali government's electronic visa system, potentially compromising data from approximately 35,000 individuals.

The exposed records circulating online include full names, photos, date of birth information, marital status, place of residence and email information, as stated in a United States official announcement published on last Thursday.

"This information compromise remains active and could expose any sensitive details submitted to the application portal," United Kingdom officials has similarly alerted travelers.

"Evaluate the dangers before applying for a digital visa required for travel to the Somali nation."

Government Response

Federal administration representatives have not issued statements on the breach. However administration officials has moved visa application system from the previous platform the original e-visa website to the new application website, without providing an official explanation.

"Even though the US Embassy in Mogadishu cannot verify whether an individual's data is included in the compromise, individuals who have applied for a Somali e-visa might be compromised," the American announcement said.

Geopolitical Impact

The revised application procedure necessitates each person traveling, incorporating applicants from the independently governed area of the breakaway region and the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, to apply for entry visas online.

Opponents claim travellers have faced supplementary costs in certain regions, amounting to duplicate payments.

Regional Dynamics

Somaliland, that announced sovereignty in three decades ago, administers its affairs through independent structures although it lacks internationally recognised. Mogadishu authorities asserts that this territory still constitutes its sovereign territory.

The reported compromise contributes to ongoing disputes involving Mogadishu and Hargeisa over control of aviation space. Even though Mogadishu regained full control of its airspace in recent years, Somaliland continues to contest the current system.

Recent Escalation

The disagreement worsened this week when Hargeisa's chief executive the Somaliland president stated the northern territory would reject Somalia's e-visa and ordered that airlines must obtain authorization from northern authorities before entering the region's aviation space.

However major airlines have chosen not to accept travelers lacking federal visa authorization.

In the latest development, Hargeisa's international relations official the diplomatic representative again insisted that "all visitors to Somaliland will obtain travel authorization upon landing", stating the federal electronic visa platform was not safe and cautioning that "personal information can fall into extremist organizations" as a result of utilizing the system.

Travel Disruptions

The impasse has left certain visitors traveling to the northern region unable to board flights following refusal of entry because they didn't have the federal electronic visa.

The northern region's aviation official, the transport official, has informed news organizations that the directives - first announced earlier this year - became operational on the tenth of November.

Officials declared companies that ignore might be directed to change course, and asserted multiple planes were previously redirected.

Aviation Authority Dispute

Footage distributed by Somaliland's aviation ministry seems to demonstrate territorial flight directors giving directions to foreign aircraft commanders - a move hailed internally as a demonstration of Somaliland's autonomy.

But the federal aviation regulator asserts it possesses exclusive regulatory authority over the Mogadishu Flight Information Region (aviation control zone), that includes all territorial skies. It has ordered all aircraft to ignore any instructions coming from sources besides federal authorities.

Officials cautioned that ignoring national and worldwide air transport standards could pose security threats and result in "significant legal repercussions".
